Why warnings appear: This software is made by a solo teacher (me), not a big corporation. Code signing certificates cost £300/year, so I chose to keep the software free instead. The security warnings are because Windows doesn't recognize new applications automatically—they're not signs of danger.

Step 1: Allow Download in Your Browser

If your browser blocks the download:

  1. Chrome: Click download arrow (↓) → Three dots next to blocked file → "Keep"
  2. Edge: "Show all" in downloads → "Keep" → "Show more" → "Keep anyway"
  3. Firefox: Download arrow → Right-click file → "Unblock"

Step 2: Allow the App to Run on Windows

If Windows SmartScreen blocks the app:

  1. Double-click the downloaded file
  2. If you see "Windows protected your PC":
    • Click "More info"
    • Then click "Run anyway"
  3. The app will launch

Alternative: Download the ZIP Version

If you still have issues, try the ZIP version:

  1. Download the ZIP file
  2. Right-click → "Extract All"
  3. Open the extracted folder
  4. Double-click "Marksmith Pro.exe"

💡 Note: After the first run, Windows remembers the app and won't show warnings again.

Multiple User Login System - Share rubrics across your department

Multiple teachers can log into the same app location to share comment banks and rubrics. Each teacher gets their own login, and a dropdown selects whose name appears on printouts. Maintains consistent department language.

Improved Network Compatibility - Better support for school networks

Fixed connection issues on school networks. Should work more reliably from network drives and school servers.

Mass Print Entire Unit - Print all students with one dialog

Print button now prints all students in current unit with one dialog. Choose all students or only marked-complete. Option to add blank pages for double-sided printing.

Streamlined Export Controls - Cleaner export buttons

Simplified to Unit PDF, Student PDF, and Class PDF. Toggle which buttons appear in Modify mode. Less clutter.

Cleaner Modify Mode - Auto-hide irrelevant buttons

When Modify mode is on, buttons not relevant to editing (Open Folder, Clear Student, Print) hide automatically. Reappear when you turn Modify off.

Deleted Comments Stay With Students - Preserve existing feedback

If you delete a comment from your bank, it stays visible for students who already have it selected. Appears with dashed border and chain icon. Disappears when unselected. Clean up your bank without affecting existing feedback.

Improved Auto-Grading - More accurate calculations

Grade calculation improved for accuracy. Better reflects performance when descriptors span different bands, with appropriate rounding.
